Deadly Head-On Car Accident Near Bradenton: Why They Occur
A recent head-on car accident near Bradenton emphasizes the dangers drivers in these collisions face. One of the most common types of crashes, they are also among the most deadly. Reckless behavior on the part of one of the parties involved is generally to blame. The following highlights why they occur.
Head-On Crash Claims Life of Palmetto Man
A 62-year-old man died tragically in a car accident that occurred on Moccasin Wallow Road in Palmetto. According to a February 22, 2020 news report by the Bradenton Herald, he was headed eastbound close to 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning when the crash occurred. He was traveling about a half-mile east of Carter Road when a 22-year-old driver in another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction crossed over the median and into his lane.
A head-on collision occurred as a result. Both men were taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton. The 62-year-old died as a result of his injuries while the other driver is listed in serious condition. Police are still investigating and have not announced whether any charges would be filed. The Insurance Information Institutes (III) reports that these types of crashes are common and account for more than 10 percent of all car accident deaths each year, claiming the lives of more than 3,500 people. Common places they are most likely to occur include:
- On major highways, particularly near exit and entrance ramps;
- One rural, two-lane roads where drivers are likely to use opposing lanes for passing;
- On one-way streets, where drivers mistakenly go in the wrong direction.
Common Causes Behind Head-On Collisions
Head-on car accidents often are the result of one of the drivers going the wrong direction. They most frequently occur after dark, which only adds to the at-fault drivers’ confusion. Unfortunately, they are generally not aware of their mistake until it is too late. As one or both drivers may be traveling at the full speed limit at the time of impact, the injuries suffered by both are often severe.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reckless driving behaviors are also another common cause of head-on collisions. In these cases, drivers were not confused about the direction they were headed or the lane they were in. They either made a conscious decision to ride in the opposite lane or they willingly chose to engage in risky driving behaviors that caused them to lose control of their vehicle. These include:
- Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
- Running red lights or disregarding stop signs;
- Improper passing and failure to yield;
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Head-on crashes can also occur as a result of road rage or due to drivers attempting to evade police pursuit.
