What Causes a Driver to Lose Control of Their Vehicle?

shutterstock_586293818

Loss of vehicle control is a common cause of car accidents in Bradenton. As a result, collisions with other motorists often occur. These can result in serious and potentially life-threatening injuries. Be aware of what causes the loss of vehicle control and the ways you can protect yourself on the road.

Loss of Vehicle Control Common Cause of Car Accidents

A recent car accident near Bradenton emphasizes the dangers loss of vehicle control poses to motorists and others they encounter. According to a July 30, 2020 news report by the Bradenton Herald, a fiery collision occurred after one driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed headfirst with another.

Police reports indicate that the car accident happened on U.S. 41, near the intersection at 33rd Street West in Palmetto. An unidentified driver was traveling south and going around a slight curve in the road when he appeared to lose control of his vehicle. He swerved into the opposing northbound lane, crashing directly into a box truck driven by a Bradenton man. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames. The box truck driver was taken to a local hospital for serious injuries. The motorist responsible for the crash died at the scene.

Loss of vehicle control is a common problem that often leads to major car crashes that result in severe injuries for all those involved. Common reasons why a driver may lose control of their vehicle include:

  • Rainy weather, which makes roads slick;
  • Adverse road conditions, such as potholes or gravel, which increase the likelihood of skids;
  • Speeding, which generally makes it harder to control a vehicle, particularly around curves;
  • Mechanical failures, such as tire blowouts and brake failures, which make loss of control more likely to happen.

Driving under the influence is also a common factor in these car accidents. Driving impaired makes you less likely to respond appropriately when loss of control does occur.

Maintaining Control to Prevent Car Accidents From Happening

According to studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), oversteering and understeering are common factors that increase the risk of losing control of your vehicle. This is particularly true when going around curves, making turns at higher rates of speed, and when driving in inclement weather. Slowing down,  not turning the steering wheel too abruptly, and not immediately slamming on the brakes if you do begin skidding can help to reduce your car accident risks.

As for other drivers, there are steps you can take to protect yourself when on the road:

  • Avoid tailgating and give other motorists plenty of space;
  • Avoid driving distractions and keep your eyes on the road at all times;
  • Avoid using inside lanes other than for passing;
  • Use particular caution near motorists who are speeding or engaging in other dangerous driving behaviors.
