Steer Clear of Reckless Drivers on the Road

FL_Road

Car accidents in Bradenton are an unfortunately common occurrence and can happen to even the safest of drivers. In most cases, it is the reckless actions of others involved who are responsible for crashes, which can leave you suffering serious injuries. As an experienced Bradenton car accident attorney, we help victims hold these drivers accountable so that they can get the compensation they need to recover. The following are tips designed to help you avoid these types of collisions and motorists who cause them.

Reckless Driving Behaviors That Contribute to Car Accidents

A 40-year-old Bradenton man recently made national headlines when he crashed his vehicle into the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. According to a December 19, 2019 WFLA News report, authorities are still investigating the accident and are not sure what caused the driver to slam his vehicle front end first into the building. They do know he was traveling at a high rate of speed and had been cited earlier passing other vehicles in a reckless manner on U.S. Highway 41.

Fortunately, no other motorists were injured as a result of the man’s actions, but reckless drivers pose significant threats to both themselves and others on the road. Under Section 316.192 of the Florida Statutes, reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle in a reckless and wanton manner, without careless disregard of others’ safety. Other common types of reckless and dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to car accidents in Bradenton include:

  • Aggressive driving, such as speeding, tailgating, improper passing, and failure to yield;
  • Distracted driving, such as texting, talking on cell phones or engaging in any activity which takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind from the important task of driving;
  • Drowsy driving, which includes falling asleep behind the wheel as well as driving while excessively fatigued, increasing your accident risks;
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or even prescription and over the counter medicines.

How To Avoid Reckless Drivers

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) advises that all of the above behaviors are illegal and result in points on your driver’s license, which could culminate in a suspension. They can also leave the driver liable in the event a car accident occurs. To protect yourself against reckless drivers, follow these tips:

  • Give other motorists plenty of room;
  • Refuse to engage with aggressive drivers;
  • Do not take their actions personally;
  • Realize the dangers the situation poses;
  • Get a description of the vehicle or the license plate number;
  • At the first safe opportunity, make police aware of the situation.
